École St-Landry Phase III

TEAM: SO Studio
CLIENT: Sunset French Immersion Foundation
LOCATION: Sunset, Louisiana
COMPLETION: 2023

This addition of three classrooms to a former church adds to the lower grade campus for École St-Landry. Each classroom references the one-room schoolhouse or red barn structures in this edge-of-town/country project. These gabled roofs are solar oriented to accommodate solar panels with the most efficient angles for electricity production. Stripes of white polycarbonate windows illuminate the interiors, creating a better learning environment using natural light. The 90-degree angle in plan at the entry is carried through the design in some walls for better acoustics and angled suspended lights for a more dynamic environment.

SO Studio worked with the National Park Service and the Louisiana State Historic Preservation Office throughout the project's development. The project received Historic Tax Credits.
